I work as an Associate Biologist and Permitted Bat Biologist with Western EcoSystem Technologies inc. I do a mixture of Field work and admin work anywhere from permitting, report writing, SOP creation, Budgeting, and proposal writing. My main work in the field addresses endangered species P/A surveys and conservation and consulting based work related to habitat assessments, acoustics, bat capture, and additional surveys as needed.

I was a lead permitted biologist with Apogee Environmental. During the first portion of the summer we concentrated on acoustic deployment and manual vetting. In July once the COVID ban on handling bats was federally lifted I oversaw and worked alongside 1-2 technicians to establish netting sites, capture, identify, and band T&E species in mining company lands. I utilized Arc GIS when establishing sites, and Utilized Access for all data entry and submission.

I worked with 2 separate groups of 3 or more individuals to locate prairie chickens by low flying helicopters. We then would use the aerial locations surveyed to locate leks by ground searches. All data was input using Microsoft access.

Bat and Herpetological Technician

Working with ESI, I traveled frequently throughout the eastern United States surveying for bat species of interest. Along with surveying we also monitored the species and collect data on the surrounding flora as well as conditions in which the bats forage and roost. Concerning herpetological work, I worked with companies to relocate turtles as well as monitor populations of either snakes or turtles of interest.

I independently plan and execute day and night hikes through rough and remote terrain, as well as on roads at fixed calling stations. Navigation is primarily done by field GPS, physical mapping and compass. On many of my sites I regularly work with land owner for access and information. As a personal side project I conduct bat acoustic monitoring to identify use of varying vegetation and habitat types on federal lands.

Between events I write various quality and assessment reports for more efficient and productive future ventures.

At Summit Lake, I have been allotted the responsibility to conduct mark recapture and monitoring studies on Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, along with radio telemetry and monitoring of Sage Grouse. As a side project, we partook in habitat modifications of stream systems, and upland areas making buffer zones to preserve sage brush in the event of a wildfire.

Through my employment with BCM I have gained knowledge and practice with mist net surveys, harp trapping, radio telemetry, banding, and bat identification on a daily basis . Other duties included carrying over 50lb in equipment for long distances over uneven and variably saturated terrain, and daily set up and take down of triple high and single high nets. I regularly worked independently or as a team member to set up traps, check nets, and input data following a strict protocol. Through my employment, I was given the opportunity to be the primary identifier of over 30 Indiana bats along with various other species.

The study entails capturing bats by mist net, recording behavior in a container (hole board), and tagging as well as monitoring bat movement using pre-installed MOTIS towers. Alongside Bat work I assist in the extraction and banding of birds at LPBO, for a long-term study.

My tasks were all conducted independently with guided help when needed.

I coordinated research that investigated the current and historical range, interactions, and possible physical disparity between the western and the eastern red bat, utilizing genetic sequencing, morphometrics, and genomics. I coordinated my own permitting and field efforts, as well as fostered the partnerships and cooperation of various entities such as national museums, state and federal facilities/organizations, ground researchers, educational facilities, and private organizations to acquire the means necessary to conduct my research.

I worked cooperatively with National Park Service staff to monitor vegetation and collect bat and other wildlife data at 6 parks in the Mojave Desert. There are several projects separated by season and category that I both help manage and work on. I worked on 4 piolet studies; bat capture, bat acoustic monitoring, spring vegetation monitoring, and white pine monitoring.  I have been part of the testing as well as the creation of these Standard Operation Procedures (SOP’s) as well as the data analysis and input. Along with these piolet studies I work on Long term studies such as Aspin Monitoring at Great Basin National park (up to 15000 feet elevation) throughout the late summer and fall. All projects required hiking in the back country up to 20 miles a day in rough terrain and multi-day camping at various temperatures and environmental conditions.

I have been given the opportunity to also collaborate with many other parks and agencies for various small mammal capture (lagomorphs, rodents, canids, bats), water quality, spring snail surveys, and vegetation surveys (milkvetch, seeding).

During my employment with the U.S Forest service I was exposed to a diversity of tasks, all having their own strict protocol to follow. I worked regularly with ArcGIS and field GPS’s for data entry, and became experienced in navigation/orienteering and understanding various maps. On a day to day basis I would regularly switch between oak surveys, snag creation, and turtle surveys as those were my main responsibilities before dark, and daily I conducted spotted owl surveys after dark as my main task. While working, I would regularly hike long distances on rocky terrain, and was quite used to random changes at a moment’s notice.
